John's Backgrounds

John began making music even before birth, tapping rhythms against his mummie's tummie. As he grew, he started listening to "graveyard music", as his mother called it. She coined this term due to the dark elements in the music of Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox, and Frontline Assembly. Inspired by this 'graveyard' beauty, John mimicked this style in his own music. His early work was created by layering vocals on experimental tracks he produced using tape decks, acoustic guitar, piano, reversed recordings, keyboards, samples and even cutlery. This body of work was given the name "Hinterland".

In the late-eighties, John stepped out on stage to make his debut as a singer in a rock band. His version of Led Zeppelin's "Dream On" blew audiences away, as no one ever expected this shy youngster to have such a golden voice. This onstage success led him to take vocal lessons at Utrecht Conservatory. However, after two years and a less than memorable performance of "Gehtsemane", John decided 'all that jazz' was not for him. Therefore, he left the conservatory to pursue his onstage career with "Les Femmes Infidèles". The band also featured piano, percussion, acoustic guitar, cello and the angelic female vocals of Lenn Lamkin. Lenn and John's erotically-charged version of Tori Amos' "Leather" left their audiences blushing.

In 1993, he also joined the rock band Piggyjar, which became an instant success and rocked stages all across the Netherlands for years until their split up in 1997. After the split, John began looking for a new avenue to challenge himself musically and vocally. When John was invited to collaborate with house producer Jamez as a singer for a new project, "Lemonsoul" was born.

Angel Theory

Challenging geographical boundaries, John also collaborates with Angel Theory, the electronic brainchild of Charles Fenech from Australia. With the use of Internet facilities and good old snail mail, some nice 'dark' tracks evolved. A remix of Transmission saw the light of day in 2004. He also joined them on stage as a keyboard player and backing vocalist during the European and American tour in 2004 and 2005.
